“The Songs: The Protest”

In the movie Terminator 3, there is a dialogue by Schwarzenegger, "It's better to be angry than to be sad"... right?!? Actually it's really interesting!! Whenever I fell sad & blue, I never listen to any sad or romantic ballad. I play all those angry protest songs like (They don't care about us & We’ve had Enough -MJ, Boom – System Of A Down, World Wide Suicide – Pearl Jam)

First-time I listen to any protest song was by Calcutta Youth Care. It’s ok but those were only message oriented but it’s Suman Da whose protest songs really moved me with my feelings, made me to think & introduced me to other singer-songwriters. Dylan, of course, is the definitive protest singer, having given the world such inevitable rally hymns as 'Blowin' in the Wind' and 'The Times They Are A-Changin'.' The centerpiece of the infamous "electric" performance at Newport, 'Maggie's Farm' is Dylan's uber-protest song: It was the iconoclast's declaration of independence from the very folk movement that sired him.

So, look to my favorite protest songs with different perspective:

Best Protest Lyrics:
Western: Working Class Hero/John Lennon (Though it explores themes of alienation and social status from childhood to adulthood, it says everything but it takes time to understand how he’s giving damm to everyone out here: Keep you doped with religion and ********* and TV/ And you think you're so clever and classless and free/ But you're still f@#%$@ peasants as far as I can see.)
Kabir Suman: Meyeta (I've listened so many songs but the way he carried the subject without being arrogant, extraordinary & it's tough too!!)

Best Protest Music:
Western: I Ain’t Marchin` Anymore / Phil Ochs (The fearless Ochs took Dylan-style folk to another level of topicality, attacking big business, blind patriotism, Jim Crow segregation, even hypocritical liberalism in frank terms worthy of a true outsider. A hero to latter-day rabble-rousers Billy Bragg, Eddie Vedder and Sean Penn, Ochs made the ultimate protest statement at age 35: He exited this troubled world by hanging himself.)
Kabir Suman: Bedcover-er prante (I know maybe you are thinking what, this is a protest song?!?! Listen again & feel the message)

Best Protest Vocal Performance:
Western: Dear Mr. President /P!nk
Kabir Suman: Howzzat(Listen when he is singing “Boma Banai”)

Best Protest Revealed In A Song:
Western: No More Slogan /Bob Marley (The late, saintly Bob Marley's signature anthem has become a fill-in-the-blank template for righteous causes of all stripes.)
Kabir Suman: Howzzat (Actually I can’t get enough of this song)

Best Protest Expression:
Western: Say It Loud, I'm Black and I'm Proud/ James Brown (Soul Brother Number One officially put an end to the old days of "Negroes" and "colored folks" with this declaration of black pride, which quickly became ubiquitous during the volatile summer of 1968. Recorded, according to JB, with a rainbow chorus of kids of all backgrounds singing the refrain.)
Kabir Suman: Meyeta (Listen the way he sings, “purush kimba napungshaker royechhe gayer zor”)

So how about you? No, no if you don’t like me still you can tell all those songs which move your inner voice to protest, maybe in this way we all come to know about more songs. C’mon …

Hey Ani ..

So you like the "Little Boxes" by Malvina Reynolds, nice song nah?!?! Though I like Pete Seeger's version of this song most. Btw, have you listened to "What Have They Done to the Rain" by Malvina Reynolds, it's also great!!

Oh God, I forget abt "Graham Stuart Steines" I think it should be in my list.

Among ur list I hvn't heard "Slogan/ Pratul Babu" & accidentaly just few days back I hv listened that song by Moushumi Di!!

Cheers to me as it's my 50th post, cool!!!

I think Suman has sung many protest songs. But his last album, NANDIGRAM, is the one of the best example of Protest Album.
