Freedom of speech is a fundamental right. But as Calvino has once said – Language is deception. Reading and hearing the rave reviews of the 2nd September programme brings back these words with an alarming resonance.

I was a co traveler on the musical journey with Kabir Suman on the 2nd of September. Enthralled by his genius, transported to a space where Music had created a bond between hundreds of people in the audience. Songs which had hitherto seldom heard , renditions with that special touch which only a person BORN for music could deliver.

And then there was a seemingly innocuous comment which hurt the deeper sensibility of the musician. However, some in the audience failed to empathise with the hurt the apparently bland comment had caused. The retaliation was all that they could understand.
And then there was violence. The very critics of Kabir Suman’s behavior, the denigrating moral police of our society , indulged in violence themselves. The shouting spree, the aggression of the group who gathered at the bottom of the stage ….was that any less? If the retaliation of the group who gathered and spilled venom at the musician during the show and afterwards in print can be justified with the logic that their behavior was merely a retaliation due to provocation. Then is the same logic not applied elsewhere too?

The impotence is however nakedly visible behind the cloak of the moral police.
