Kabir Suman; A Concert And Why Mumbai Will Look Back—The Tidbits Of Mumbai Concert

“Please don’t talk about your age; we love you for who you are not what you are.”

This was the first remark, Suman Da got when he dropped the curtains of his 40-minutes concert in Mumbai.

But the best was when a CA, Samik Bandhopaddhay, humbly remarked, “It’s your song, Suman Da, that I’m here today. In my 1st year of CA, I flunked but when I listened to the song, Ektur Jonyo Pash Number Nei, Fell Kara Asha Tabu Faanktale Thakbei, it changed everything around me; and from there I never looked back.”

There are so many, so many emotions and pleasures which filled the evening of 5th October when Suman Da performed in Navi Bombay Bengali Association (NBBA).

For me, it was 11 years, I haven’t been face to face with Suman Da. Forget about every logic a smart person can think about, it was the day I can happily invest million tomorrows to experience.

6:30 pm, I entered early in the “pujo pandel,” mr. purohit was busy in sandhya-arati and I asked one of my khabroo but he insisted, “Suman Da hasn’t come yet.” But still I walked slowly straight to the stage and OH MY GOD, Suman Da on the stage, monitoring the piano.

As usual, I was feeling “Yoo-Hoo!” and silently stood behind him, minutely observing, from toe to head, the man I have seen 11 years back. Though the best part was, when he was monitoring the sound distribution.

Oooh! It’s superb!

Then the most disturbing thing happened. Suddenly, the rain-god started showering his unusual blessing through rains. Maybe that day, the rain-goddess scolded the rain-god badly and he was not in good mood.

Really, that one-hour rain made everything in jeopardy as the cables were struck under the water and the organizer was thinking, whether it’d possible or not.

But thank Maa Durga, ultimately at 9:15 pm, Suman Da stepped in on the stage.

In Mumbai, we can’t continue any concert after 10:00 pm, so he had only 45 minutes in his “jhola.” And when he started opening his “jhola,” the NBBA got started rolling.

He dedicated that night’s performance to the women and cemented his message with this song:

“Meyera kintu larte bhalobashe
Tader larai ei gaanei benche thak.”

But he never forgot his “nesha”, the “nesha” – Rabindranath and piano – and we didn’t mind to be “neshagrasto,” when he sang:

"Godhuli gagone megheder dekhechhilo tara” &

“Pathohara tumi pathik jeno go sukher karone”

Each song, each remarks, each passionate feelings added the necessary warmth to cold heart of each listener who has waited for 2 hours.

Can you imagine, in rain disturbed night, where you can sit but you have to keep your feet on the water, there were around 800 listeners proudly showing their love and respect for Suman Da, cheering “Tomake Chai, Tomake Chai.”

It is!

And ultimately, at 9:55 pm, when he uttered those four-words, “Prathomato Aami Tomake Chai,” those listeners’ enthusiasm and claps made themselves even stronger.

And it ended.

Everybody was with the little hope to click a photograph and to talk with him; to let him know how he has changed their life. But he didn’t behave as like rain-god, he smilingly stood in front of those big, small and tiny cameras, widening everyone’s cute smile (cute smile coz mostly were girls).

Then he headed towards the SUV waiting for him. He got in, waved his hand and the SUV moved on though the clad tuned road. And it forced us to go against one of his songs, “Pechhone Royechhe Pare Gatokaal Gulo, Tader Hisebe Ar Katai Na Din.”

No, we will, we will, we will – we’ll look back Suman Da, we’ll look back where you’ve tuned the time with your music, to make the present a gift. We’ll look back.
